Our work is driven by a passionate belief that we all have a responsibility to protect birds, other wildlife and the environment. Bird populations reflect the health of the planet on which our future depends. And you can’t help birds without helping all of the other creatures that live alongside them. The RSPB is a million voices for nature – all nature, every buzzing, crawling, slithering, fluttering part of it.
The need for wildlife conservation has never been greater. Climate change, agricultural intensification, expansion of urban areas and transport infrastructure, and over-exploitation of our seas all pose major threats to birds and other wildlife. The RSPB could not exist without our supporters and members. Whether you join us, give a donation, purchase items from us or do some volunteering, your support is vital to the future of wildlife and the places where they live. What does the RSPB do?
- We work around the world, from back gardens to the southern oceans, saving species from extinction, protecting special places for wildlife and motivating people to add their voice for nature.
- We are active across the UK at national, regional and local levels - our work is relevant to your environment.
- We help threatened birds and wildlife survive, from the white-tailed eagle to the great yellow bumblebee.
- We save special places to help the wildlife that lives there, protecting and even recreating habitats where they’ve been lost.
- We help save the environment by doing all we can with our conservation work to lessen the effects of climate change and help wildlife adapt.
- We connect people with nature, creating opportunities for everyone to experience wildlife first hand.
- We champion birds and the environment to decision-makers.
- We research the problems facing birds and the environment, looking for practical solutions that we can implement and promote to others.
- We manage 200 nature reserves, where wildlife can thrive and people can be inspired.
- We champion the cause of biodiversity conservation within the wider debate on sustainable development.
- We tackle international conservation issues through the BirdLife International Partnership - a global coalition of like-minded conservation organisations.
- We work with decision-makers on behalf of birds and the environment.
- We tackle wildlife crime.
- We work with landowners and farmers to help countryside birds.
The RSPB has:

- a network of over 160 local groups and more than 80 youth groups.
- Volunteers founded the RSPB over 110 years ago and remain a vitally important part of the organisation today; there are at least nine volunteers for every paid member of staff.
