Mencap

Mencap was founded in 1946 and has grown from a group of enthusiastic parents into Britain’s largest organisation for people with a learning disability and their families and carers. We are an individual membership organisation, with a large network of more than 500 affiliated local groups. We have a National Assembly which is a democratic body made up of members elected from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which include people with a learning disability. Our status as an equal alliance of people with a learning disability, their parents and carers is unique. Our work is shaped by what our members tell us about their needs and wishes. We work with members who are committed and prepared to work hard to represent the views of others.

Mencap exists because children and adults with a learning disability are disadvantaged in society. They face discrimination and prejudice and are denied equal access to essential services, like healthcare, education and housing.

Mencap seeks to right these wrongs, by speaking out for the rights of people with a learning disability, campaigning for change and helping others understand what it means to have a learning disability. Providing access to good information about rights and services can make a world of difference to the lives of people with a learning disability and their families and carers.

Mencap runs a learning disability helpline providing information and advice on anything to do with a learning disability to people in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.  Children and adults with a learning disability can lead full lives if they get the right day-to-day support.

Mencap’s work in the community with our members and partners is bringing about change in the provision of quality services, everything from housing and one-to-one support to lifelong learning and employment. Our leisure clubs, projects and groups help people with a learning disability lead fulfilling lives, meet new people and gain confidence. We also support groups of people with a learning disability who want to speak up for themselves and their peers about the things that matter to them.

Mencap believes people with a learning disability should have an equal right to a life full of new discoveries and exciting challenges. This could be enjoying stimulating play opportunities, gaining new skills or doing a job that pays; it’s all about having higher esteem, more confidence and a larger stake in society. We support children through early year’s services. Moving into adulthood, we have three colleges of further education in England and Wales, and support learning and training projects across the country. Our employment service helps thousands of people find jobs that are right for them, with appropriate training and support.

Having the right place to live, with the right support, is the key to successful community care. It is the first step for people with a learning disability towards leading an independent life. Mencap’s housing and support helps people achieve this goal by providing access to capital to buy or rent property, or through support services to meet the individual’s needs.

Mencap wants a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included. We want everyone to have the opportunity
to achieve the things they want from life.
